A Winter Family Adventure Under the Warm Sun: A Complete Guide to 6 Days in Fuxian Lake & Xishuangbanna
While the north is gripped by biting winds and heavy snow, have you ever dreamed of escaping with your children to a warm, spring-like paradise? Imagine strolling through flower fields in a dress during the depths of winter, getting up close with elephants, exploring the mysteries of a tropical rainforest, and finally watching seagulls dance by a highland lake. This isn't a fantasy — it's the winter gift that Xishuangbanna and Fuxian Lake have carefully prepared for you and your little ones.
At the start of 2023, I took my child on this five-day journey. From the tropical charm of Xishuangbanna to the tranquil waters of Fuxian Lake, every step was filled with surprise and emotion. This guide not only records our footsteps but also distills countless practical tips, hoping to light the way for your own winter family trip.
Overview: A Perfect Transition from Tropical Rainforest to Highland Lake
Our route was designed to balance the kids' enjoyment with mom's photo opportunities, with no backtracking: Enter via Xishuangbanna → Fuxian Lake → Exit via Kunming. If you have extra time, I strongly recommend adding a day in Kunming. The experience of feeding seagulls in winter will absolutely make your children scream with joy.

Chapter 1: The Star-Spangled Border Town (Day 1)
Gaozhuang Xishuangjing: A "Little Chiang Mai" on a Dog Cart
Flying in from across the country, Xishuangbanna is easily accessible by high-speed rail, plane, or car. Our first stop was Gaozhuang Xishuangjing — a 1,200-acre tourist hub right next to the Lancang River. It integrates dining, accommodation, sightseeing, and entertainment, with the Six Kingdoms Water Market, Starlight Night Market, and countless hotels and hostels all concentrated here.

The biggest surprise? The dog-pulled carts everywhere! They cost 15-20 RMB per hour with a 200 RMB deposit, and no driver's license is needed. Each cart can hold up to two adults and two children. Our family of four fit perfectly, and the kids were bouncing with excitement. Don't forget to haggle — you can usually get two hours for 35 RMB.
Best Photo Spots:
- Left side of the Big Golden Pagoda: Laiding Meisu (Xishuangbanna landmark + orange vintage car), riverside parking lot (you can walk down to the Lancang River), the nameless Buddhist pagoda (almost无人, incredibly photogenic)
- Right side of the Big Golden Pagoda: Shuiyunjingju (pink chairs and architecture), the corner of Jinglan Grand Hotel, the riverside of the Six Kingdoms Water Market (20 RMB during the day, free in the evening)
Starlight Night Market: A Dazzling Dream of Exotic Lights
As dusk falls and the crowds swell, the Starlight Night Market slowly reveals its mystery. Spread out around the Big Golden Pagoda, the market is a patchwork of vendors from all over. Dai-style paper umbrellas, the golden pagoda, and countless lights weave together into a breathtaking scene.
Practical Tips: - There are many entrances; the one at the southwest corner by the riverside parking lot is the largest and least crowded - Dai costumes, fridge magnets, souvenirs, and little dresses are everywhere — remember to bargain - I strongly recommend buying a Dai costume and doing your own photos (39.9 RMB for adults, 80 RMB for kids). It's much more fun than a cookie-cutter photoshoot - Around 4 PM, the entrance is restricted to pedestrians only — no bikes or carts allowed
Best Photography Spots: - The steps beside the Big Golden Pagoda - From the pagoda steps, shooting down at the umbrella stalls - The stone bridge in the barbecue area - By the Six Kingdoms Water Market river, shooting back toward the pagoda
Accommodation Recommendation: The Mondrian Design Hotel (high-rise at the entrance of Starlight Night Market, convenient access, but no pool and average value for money)
Chapter 2: Hello, Elephants! Hello, Rainforest! (Day 2)

Wild Elephant Valley: Up Close with Asian Elephants
Just 22 kilometers from Gaozhuang lies Wild Elephant Valley — the only place in China where wild Asian elephants still roam. It's China's first national park themed around animal protection and environmental conservation, and an absolute must-visit for families.
Tickets & Experiences: - General admission: 58 RMB (includes touching and feeding elephants) - Fruit baskets: small 20 RMB, large 80 RMB - Special program "Rainforest Elephant Herding": 198 RMB (accompany elephants on a walk and help bathe them)
Tips for Visiting: - Don't buy the cable car ticket — most attractions are near the South Gate, so just head there directly - Arrive by 10 AM and go straight to the feeding area — everyone else will be watching the 10:10 show, so you'll have the place to yourselves for photos - At 10:40, explore other areas (Butterfly Garden, pythons, lizards) - At 11:00, try photos with elephants, sitting on their trunks, riding on their backs, etc. - At 12:00, watch the elephant show. Sit as far inside as possible — the area opposite the entrance is the actual front of the show
Elephant Show Times: 10:10, 12:00, 14:30, 16:30
Manzhang Village: An Authentic Dai Village Playground
A 30-minute drive from Wild Elephant Valley, Manzhang Village is a small, authentic Dai settlement. Admission is free, and there's parking at the village entrance. Half a day is perfect for families.
Must-Try Activities: - Handmade paper: 10 RMB (40 RMB to take it home) - Pottery making: 10 RMB (15 RMB to take it home) - Bamboo raft: 20-30 RMB per person, 100 RMB for a private raft. The rainforest river rafting trip takes about 20 minutes, and you can paddle yourself - Fish catching: 10 RMB — kids can wade into the river and catch fish

Don't miss the Wanhan Putiyuan roast chicken at the village entrance — it's incredibly popular. There's also "Peng Yuyan Coffee" on a street corner, serving Lao-style bagged coffee, a Xishuangbanna specialty.
Accommodation for the Night: Same as the previous night
Food Recommendation: Ji Ji Niao (by the Mekong River, beautiful setting with live music. The food is average, but the atmosphere is the real draw)
Chapter 3: Exploring the Tropical Plant Kingdom (Day 3)
Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden: A Wonderland of 13,000 Living Plants
Founded in 1959 by botanist Cai Xitao, the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences covers 1,125 hectares and houses over 13,000 species of living plants. It's the largest and most diverse botanical garden in China.
East Zone vs. West Zone: - West Zone: Well-developed, with gardens, a hot air balloon, and large lawns. Ideal for a half-day visit - East Zone: More primitive, like a dense virgin rainforest. Best for those with extra time
Recommended West Zone Route (tram + walking): Main Gate → Shade Plant Garden (get off) → Aquatic Plant Garden (giant water lilies, bamboo rafts) → Palm Garden → Banyan Garden → Exotic Flower Garden (has a restaurant and tram stop) → Hundred Flower Garden (heart-shaped trees, hot air balloon) → Celebrity Tree Garden → National Tree & Flower Garden → Hundred Fruit Garden stop → Vine Garden stop → Exit

Tickets & Fees: - Admission: 75 RMB (includes both zones, cannot be purchased separately) - Tram: 50 RMB - Night insect observation + guide: 400 RMB per family, 80 RMB per group - Daytime guided tour: 350 RMB for both zones, 220 RMB for West Zone only
Special Note: If you stay at the Wanglian Hotel inside the garden, you can book a night-time insect observation and study class. Kids follow a guide to explore nocturnal insects — an unforgettable experience. This was our biggest regret of the trip, and we'll definitely make up for it next time!
Accommodation for the Night: Naga Hotel (inside Gaozhuang, has a pool and terrace. The hotel shuttle can take you anywhere in the area)
Food Recommendation: Mao Jiang (camping-style atmosphere, good food — one of our most satisfying meals in Xishuangbanna)
Chapter 4: Dai Days in an Exotic Land (Day 4)
Manting Park: The "Garden of the Soul" Across a Millennium
Manting Park is the oldest park in Xishuangbanna, with a history of over 1,300 years. In the Dai language, it's called "Chun Huan," meaning "Garden of the Soul." Legend says a Dai princess was so captivated by its beauty that her soul was drawn into the scenery. Admission is 40 RMB. Go in the morning for fewer crowds and better photos.

Recommended Route: Zhou Enlai Memorial Square → Zhangha Pavilion → Dai King's Palace → Imperial Garden → City Heart Pagoda → Imperial Elephant Café → Octagonal Corridor Bridge → White Pagoda → Earth Goddess Statue → Exit from the White Pagoda entrance directly to Zongfo Temple
Photo Highlight: The area around the Imperial Elephant Café, with its twisting vines, exotic flowers, and a perfect blend of nature and architecture
Elephant Feeding Times: 10:30, 14:50, 16:30
Zongfo Temple & Banruo Temple: Gold and White Splendor
Zongfo Temple is connected to the back gate of Manting Park. The incense burns strong here, and the architecture is exquisite — rivaling temples in Thailand. Note: If you're wearing a backless Dai costume from Manting Park, remember to bring a jacket or shawl.
Banruo Temple sits on a hillside in the Manzhen village area. Its pure white pagoda shines against the blue sky, creating a scene of sacred beauty. The temple is small, but its symmetrical architectural aesthetics are breathtaking. Important: Dai costumes are not allowed here for photos. Wear a long dress and bring a jacket.
Food Recommendation: Luo Luo Ice House (a long-standing local favorite with long queues. Try the pounded chicken feet, cold noodles, lettuce-wrapped beef, and Luo Luo-style fried noodles)
Chapter 5: The Windy Lake of Fuxian (Day 5)

A five-hour drive from Xishuangbanna brings you to the highland gem — Fuxian Lake. Just an hour from Kunming, this lake reaches a depth of 155 meters (equivalent to a 50-story building). Its water is a brilliant sapphire blue, rivaling Erhai Lake in Dali.
Xiaowan Village: Yunnan's "Santorini"
Located on the southeast side of Fuxian Lake, Xiaowan Village was once a fishing village. Now it's dotted with guesthouses and cafes, perfect for watching the sunset in peace and quiet.
Sun Mountain Town: A European Fairytale World

At the top of the mountain, Sun Mountain Town offers free parking. Its European-style buildings are predominantly red, creating a fairytale atmosphere. A road with yellow railings halfway up the mountain offers a panoramic view of Fuxian Lake — deep, quiet blue, breathtakingly beautiful. Watch out for traffic when taking photos.
Mu Coffee: A Grand Sunset
This café also doubles as a photography base. You need to buy a ticket to have coffee here. Watching the sunset from this spot is the crowning jewel of any Fuxian Lake trip.
Final Chapter: The Meaning of Travel Goes Beyond the Scenery
Over six days, we traveled from tropical rainforest to highland lake, from the gentleness of elephants to the wonder of plants, from the exotic culture of the Dai people to the fairytale charm of a European-style town. For the children, it was a vivid outdoor classroom. For the adults, it was a release for the soul.
A Few Final Tips: 1. If you have extra time, add 1-2 days in Kunming. The winter seagull feeding experience is not to be missed 2. When renting a dog cart in Xishuangbanna, always drive along the very edge of the road and don't leave the Gaozhuang area 3. Starlight Night Market photoshoots are full of pitfalls. Buy a Dai costume and do it yourself for a much better experience 4. At the CAS Botanical Garden, if time allows, definitely stay one night for the insect observation experience 5. Fuxian Lake is less crowded and stunningly beautiful. Slow down and enjoy the breeze and sunshine
Winter is not the end of travel — it's another beginning. Take your children and go to Xishuangbanna and Fuxian Lake for a warm, wonderful date!
